1. It's not so much that she won't eat. It's just that a whole lot of other things go on while she is eating. Like talking, LOTS of talking. Or the telling of knock-knock jokes. Kids don't tell just ONE knock-knock joke. They could go on forever if you let them. And so to keep dinner time from going on forever, "Keep Eating" is a necessary reminder.

2. I don't have a problem with her watching T.V. She is an excellent student. She gets her homework done. She likes to read. She gets sufficient exercise (e.g. Tae Kwon Do, ballet). She plays well with others. I also monitor the programs she watches. So, if she wants to watch T.V., that's fine with me, as long as it doesn't interfere with anything else.

3. If I am telling her to "Sit Down," there is no other option.

Dinner time serves as one example. At dinner, she is to sit down in her own chair and eat. If she gets up out of her chair to wander around while she is eating or if she tries to sit in my lap during a meal, I tell her to sit down. End of discussion.

Some other options from another parent:

1) Please eat a little of everything, I would feel bad if you were hungry later on when we won't have any food. Also, we worked together to make dinner and you added the spices just right, the farmer worked to grow the plants, etc.

2) Turn OFF the TV; even better, do not turn it On

3) If you don't want to sit here, What would you like to do together? Give a decision that they can make, Would you rather sit and do some artwork or work on your letters, etc., or something else?

Ms. Wannabe, "Temporary Counter-Cyclical Funding" is the result of a presidential order mandating that, henceforth, all rest room facilities be modified so that, upon being flushed, water circle the toilet bowl in a counter-clockwise direction.

This phenomena causes large numbers of the populace to become so engrossed watching their water closets that they forget entirely the ever worsening state of the national economy.

Roosevelt first used this trick in the thirties. It kept the entire population so mesmerized that they didn't look up again until 1941 when Pearl Bailey got bombed in Hawaii starting WWII.

And in her honor, whenever this trick is repeated, it is referred to as a 'bail' out!

Hi Roxanne, future pres elect Obama also thinks home owners should get some bail out also. We all can get in line but those that get the frosting on the cake will be first in line. Can't just see the donations pouring into the coffers of the politicians that finagle the big boys what they want. It all stinks in my opinion. I also don't have any idea how to solve the problem so I guess its easy to throw a stone or two. I do know this, we are the ones that will get socked with the bill some where a long the way.

For your heartfelt gift of this years DMV sticker to some less fortunate miscreant, you Roxanne Wannabe are hear by awarded the Santa's 'Elf Giver Of The Year' award. Kudos for your generosity!

As for the miscreant who was blessed by your kind heart, may he/she soon burn out a rear tail lamp drawing attraction to his/her vehicle. This will cause the trailing police officer to notice, pull him/her over, and do a DMV license check prior to issuing a citation for a bad tail lamp. Within moments, his/her attempt to avoid a registration fee will cost said grinch to suffer the full extent of the law.

Have a very merry Thanksgiving, and remember, it is much much better to give than to receive.

WI has a minimum markup law, so contrary to what they say, gas stations are making money on gas, especially now that the prices are so high. 9.18% of $3.00 is more than the same percentage of $1.50! I believe the law may not be being enforced now on ethanol-blended fuels. The price of crude has decreased by about $1.75 a gallon and the price of gas has not decreased by that amount, especially in our area, so I think the retailers are making a dandy profit at the consumers' expense. Like OPEC, they found out people will still have to buy the product regardless of the price. It's better to make a much higher profit on what you sell even if you lose 10% of your sales. Do the math!

It's classic retail competition. Build where your competitors are and steal their market share, as long as you believe yourself to be a superior product. 50% of Bed, Bath and Beyond's stores are within 3 miles of a Linen and Things, I don't think that's a coincidence, although I don't know if either had a strategy to co-locate with the other. BB&B's predicting a 18% sales increase because of the 120 stores Linens and Things is closing. I remember not too long ago reading a story that Dave Thomas of Wendy's for the longest time did not have a real estate arm for the firm. They just waited for a McDonald's to build and built as close to it as possible. The Menards/Home Depot is going to be real interesting. Home Depot isn't doing well, and I would suspect Menards is in the same boat with the downturn in home remodeling and construction. I have to admit, I stopped shopping at the Bluemound Menards (unless they had something specific that no one else carried), since their prices were similar and I thought the store had become really run down. I like the Menards up on Capitol, so I'll probably give this new one a chance when it opens. Gas stations is a completely different story. They don't make all that much money on gas, they make it on the food shops and other services. That BP probably is just fine with doing AAMCO transmission work and not worrying about the gas. The inventory carrying cost for the gas nearly wipes out the small margin they get on it. Woodman's is awesome, but I also think they are a 'destination' store, so they'll build where ever and people will drive to them (I know I will). The Oak Creek store is kind of out there, but in Kenosha and LaCrosse they are butting heads right up against major competitors like Wal-Mart Supercenters and other grocery retailers. But if I need a gallon of milk and nothing else, Pick 'n Save here I come.

I've wondered the same thing about gas stations. Like on the Corner of Lilly and Capitol. There are three gas stations around that intersection, although the BP hasn't been selling gas lately, and the prices are usually the same. Although I have to admit, that if one of them is one or two cents cheaper, I will go to that one.

One has to wonder why these competing stores build right on top of one another? The new Menard's right across the street from Home Depot in Waukesha can't be good for either of them. I like Woodman's philosophy. They don't build in an area where someone else has the market sewed up.

Just curious, by the way, whether the offended person in situation 2 uses the name of our Lord in all his expletives. Being a Christian, myself, I am offended when people do that. Even if people don't mean to be offensive when they use the Lord's name as a curse, it is blasphemy. And I think it's different than saying "gyp" which is at best questionably linked to Gypsies. How would people feel if I used their mother's name as a curse, like the Lord's name? And EVERYONE knows what it means when you use Jesus's name in vain, unlike "gypped."

I am a Filipino-American and I am not looking to be offended when someone declares that they "flipped out." The idiot who left that phone message was a coward looking to be offended. Perhaps they forgot their meds that night (no offense to the mentally ill). Boy, it sure is hard to say anything these days without possibly offending someone. That anonymous (I'm presuming they didn't leave a name--except possibly on the caller ID) offended person needs to get a grip (no offense to film crew members.)

In defense of Judge Steinberg, as bloggers representing the Brookfield N Now website, we have been asked when we signed up to keep the blogs "local". It's okay to comment from time to time on national issues, but remember that what makes the Brookfield Now site so unique is the local flavor and commentary from the residents. We all represent a unique "voice" of Brookfield (and its BORDERS - in fairness to Roxanne). I enjoy Roxanne's writing and her take on Elizabeth Edwards. But My Community/Brookfield Now bloggers need to remember why we are here in the first place and, with that in mind, the Judge has a point.

Interesting idea about the Christmas card. I vision a Santa's hat on the Fonz with a "heeeeyy" in a photoshopped balloon over his head. You could dress the kids up in poodle skirts!

I haven't seen it up close, but from the pictures, I'm not sure I like it. You're right, though. It's lovely not having to contemplate it. Brookfield's "Unfolding Red" was described by one of my readers as a "grasshopper with a shotgun." It certainly leaves room for interpretation!

A story does not need to be directly related to our community in order to be relevant to our communty, or of interest to it. And certainly some of your posts Judge Steinberg, have dealt with matters completely unrelated to Brookfield or S.E. Wisconin. And that's great. If every post from every blogger was focused on our local area and its issues, it would get pretty boring pretty fast.
