Invitation to "Math Wars":Peace Conference/Candidate Forum

By Ted Klumb
Friday, Feb 29 2008, 04:54 PM

If you have concerns about your child's Math program, which program your child should take, or what the heck are they teaching my kids now, please attend this Math presentation. Don't get your information from a web site promoting one method over another. Don't rely on a Yahoo group for information. Ask the professionals who are familiar with both methods, teach both methods, and measure the results.  This presentation will help you guide your child, or you, to make the right decision in selecting Math programs and pathways through High School.

See for yourself how our students are doing by viewing actual internal and standardized state test scores. Compare and contrast the performance of the New Math vs. Traditional Math. See the facts and make up your own mind.

District Parent Math Night Presentation – March 3 – 6:30 p.m. Community Center

Menomonee Falls - We invite all parents to a meeting designed to provide information about the District’s PreK-12 grade mathematic program. The meeting of parents and educators is scheduled for Monday, March 3rd – 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Community Center, Room 102. There will be presentations by District math teacher leaders, who will outline the goals of the entire program, as well as present test data, provide parent feedback, and other result indicators. There will be time provided for questions from the audience. We encourage all parents to attend.

Major Science Dignitary to Visit MFHS

By Ted Klumb
Tuesday, Feb 26 2008, 09:10 AM

The Science Department has landed James Gates from the University of Maryland, a big name in science.  He will be speaking to our HS students on February 28th.

Sylvester James Gates, Jr. received two bachelor degrees (one in Math and a second in Physics) from the Massachusetts Institiute of Technology in 1973, and a Ph.D. in physics from MIT in 1977. His thesis was the first one written at MIT on the Topic of SUSY.* He has been featured on four PBS specials such as "Breakthrough: The Changing Face of Science in America."

He is a science celebrity in the same league of Carl Sagan and Steven Hawking. He discussion will be a great opportunity for our science students.

Thank you Science Department, for scooping up this great scientist to advance science in this community.

In particle physics, supersymmetry (often abbreviated SUSY) is a symmetry that relates elementary particles of one spin to another particle that differs by half a unit of spin and are known as superpartners. In other words, in a supersymmetric theory, for every type of boson there exists a corresponding type of fermion, and vice-versa.As of 2008 there is no direct evidence that supersymmetry is a symmetry of nature. Since superpartners of the particles of the Standard Model have not been observed, supersymmetry, if it exists, must be a broken symmetry allowing the 'sparticles' to be heavy. If supersymmetry exists close to the TeV energy scale, it allows the solution of two major puzzles in particle physics. One is the hierarchy problem - on theoretical grounds there are huge expected corrections to the particles' masses, which without fine-tuning will make them much larger than they are in nature. Another problem is the unification of the weak interactions, the strong interactions and electromagnetism. Another advantage of supersymmetry is that supersymmetric quantum field theory can sometimes be solved. Supersymmetry is also a consequence of most versions of string theory, though it can exist in nature even if string theory is wrong. The minimal supersymmetric Standard Model is one of the best studied candidates for physics beyond the Standard Model.

By Ted Klumb
Saturday, Feb 16 2008, 10:34 AM

Many of you may not know it but a lot of your fellow citizens are involved in a group call the "Finance Study Group." The goal of the group is to identify andeliminate waste, as well as to make sure that as many dollars go toward the actual classroom education of all students in Menomonee Falls. Some of the functions have that have taken place: Survey to staff to identify cost savings. comparing our district to neighboring districts to compare cost and performance as well as many other productive items stated below in the agenda for the next meetng. Please attend, and join, if you have an interrest in this group.

What Employers Need and Expect

By Ted Klumb
Friday, Feb 1 2008, 05:40 PM

While I am more than willing to hear about what educational pundits say the children of this country need to compete in the world market, I put far more weight on what employers tell me every day.

What do employers want? What do they expect from their employees? Is it the ability to program software in the latest open architecture platform or successfully run a diagnostic program on the latest MRI device?

In commercial real estate I speak very bluntly with CEOs of some of the largest companies in America as well as the proud owner of a 3 man shop who straightens the frames of damaged trucks. They both want the same thing from their workers. In fact, I have never heard a different answer to this question: What skill(s) do you want from our school district’s graduates?

Their answer: “We want them to show up!” “You give me that and we have something we really need.”

Logically, the second item: “Have them get here on time or at least tell us when they are going to be late.”

How can this be? They know we want our kids to be prepared for a profoundly different future and have the skills to master technology that has not even been imagined. How shallow of the not to see the big picture.

The fact of the matter is you cannot operate the “stem cell phone production machine” in the year 2525 if you are not there to operate it, much less invent it. You have to show up.

Well, I have some bad news for the employers and wealth generators of our world. Parents have ownership of instilling responsibility to your children-not the schools-sorry.

This will come as good news to perceptive parents. They already know that instilling the basic skill of showing up, and arriving on time, will put your child far ahead of those who have greater abilities and talent but can only demonstrate them when they decide to make an appearance.

Coincidentally this applies to school as well. The more you are there the more you will learn. Even the most cynical skeptic of public education has to concede that showing up at school is more beneficial to learning than staying in bed.

Two days ago MPS gave the option to students and parents to either stay home on a very cold day or come to school. A little over 50 % showed up. It is striking how close that percentage is to the MPS graduation rate.
